Connecting the Dots
My initial reaction to hearing about this paper was a unique one. Everyone else seemed to be terrified of the thing, but I was excited. I plan to be attending a 4-year college next year and it was nice to see an assignment that sort of mimics what I may have to do in college. I want to study computer science as my major and I am having trouble finding ways I could link stereotyping into that. Maybe the stereotype of what a computer programmer looks like? I believe it would be hard to write 10-12 pages about that subject, however. If anyone reads this blog post and has a suggestion for me, feel free to comment! :)

7 Times
Erica's Post
Erica seems to just not understand why police would do such a thing. But it digs deeper than that, not just that they would do it but that they would shoot the young boy 7 times. Her tone is one of hatred toward the people who could pull off such a thing. I think the fact is that we don't know the facts. All we see is what is reported in the media. We were not at the crime scene, and even if we were we would not have the best perspective on the incident. We are taught to hate the people who do these things, but we may only be getting half the truth, the part that people want us to hear. Erica's conclusion is that her question still has not been answered. The post is title "Why 7 times", and by the end of the post she is still asking the same question. I'm guessing part of the reason it was written like this is to keep us asking the same question after reading. We see that she has not reached an answer to the question, so we must ponder the topic and find our own answer. It seems Javi's post is more neutral on the subject. It attempts to give you both conclusions that can be made from the incident, whether the police did what was right, or were they out of line.

Racial Profiling Lives On
Racial Profiling Lives On
I feel like to get a full understanding of this article, you would need some sort of background knowledge. I believe if I had read a summary of the fourth amendment prior to reading this article I would have easier understood what was being discussed. Nevertheless, I understand the main point of the article. Even though this ruling in New York seems like a big win for people against police brutality and unfair racial profiling, it won't really have any affect on actually policing. We as a country will have to come together and ask the Supreme Court to rule on these situations.

Tools That Change the Way We Think
link to classmate's responses to the questions.
Avid users of social media sites like Facebook seem to lack many self-developed opinions. With the filter bubble Ted talk fresh at mind, Facebook will show you more of what they think you agree with and therefore you never get the other side of the coin. Technology has created so many distractions that I do not believe we learn as effectively as we use to. Instead of reading books in our spare time, the average American watches 6 hours of television daily. This time could be spent reinforcing ideas previously learned earlier in the day or actually learning something new on your own. A positive that we have gotten out of technological advances is the fact that so many resources are readily available, we just need to find the motivation to reach out and grab them.

We are being tailored to what an algorithmic computer program thinks we want to see. I wouldn't say that this concept is new to me but the TED talk was certainly the first time I have seen any in depth explanation of it. I am not one to fret about something like this, but I do understand why the speaker is hesitant to trust these programs. Why am I to be mad that my computer is showing me something I want to see? This is my perspective on the whole thing but I understand the points addressed in the video. I am not sure what the speaker wants, maybe a switch that can toggle this program on/off of your computer search? I guess this raises the question of how far will the internet go. We already know what the federal government has access to and nobody seems to be doing much to stop it. Technology is ever growing and I think we as humans will have to make fundamental changes to what we believe is right in order to allow this growth. The internet is a place where everyone should feel comfortable, but many do not. I believe my searches are effective enough and I don't see any reason to change my habits. I have never spent more than a minute looking for what I want on a Google search. You know what they say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".
